This year too, on the occasion of Venice Carnival 2012, a big Theatre will be set up in St. Mark’s Square.

The “Grand Theatre” will be the heart of one of the most famous events in the world. Besides the traditional shows, such as the “Angel Flight”, the “Festa delle Marie” (or “Feast of Marie”) and the “More Beautiful Mask”, it will also host performances of the most innovative companies, including shows of choreographic companies and circus-theatre shows. The programme of the evening events to be held in St. Mark’s Square will include dances, parties with early evening aperitif entertainment and Dj sets to accompany electrifying happy hours.

On 9th December 2011, on the Island of Murano, in the Museum of Glass, was inaugurated the exhibition “1861-2011: UN’ISOLA, UN’ARTE, UN MUSEO”[one island, one art, one museum], a great retrospective exhibition on the art of glass-making, which allows visitors to learn about the history and life of this Venetian island, famous all over the world for its glass works of art.

In 1861 an archive that held information on the long history of glass making in Murano was created. The archive had a museum section as well, which soon became the most important section because many glass items (ancient and modern) produced in the island were donated by the owners of the kilns. To mark the 150th anniversary of the creation of the archive, a great exhibition containing almost two hundred items was opened. The items were made in the last 150 years and are the most significant elements in the museum’s collection. They are an example of the unique skills of their creators.

The exhibition includes items shown during the Biennale exhibitions and creations by master glass makers and glass factories that had not been previously exhibited. There will also be new donations, which have increased the museum’s collection of XX century items.

Campo San Polo

On December 2011, in Campo San Polo, the largest ice skating rink ever set up in Venice was inaugurated. It will be open to the public until Carnival end, 21st February 2012.

There is a 450 square metre egg-shaped rink, surrounded by a ‘village of stalls’, a traditional Christmas market, with locally made arts-and-crafts items and food and wine.

Opening hours: Mondays to Thursdays from 3 pm to 7 pm, Fridays from 3 pm to 9 pm, Saturdays from 11 am to 9 pm, Sundays from 11 am to 7 pm. There will be special prices and special season tickets (10 entries) and ice skates to rent.

The exhibition “VENICE AND EGYPT”, held in the enchanting Sala dello Scrutinio in the Doge’s Palace, will be open to the public until 22nd January 2012.

It is an unmissable opportunity to learn more about the history of the ancient, intense, long-lasting and continuous relations between the Most Serene Republic of Venice and the other Mediterranean countries, here represented by one of the most important Mediterranean civilisations, Egypt. There are more than 300 priceless items of outstanding beauty to admire.

The 2012 opera season has fourteen operas and 105 shows, from January to September, including Lou Salomé (Giuseppe Sinopoli), The fortunate Deception and Opportunity makes a thief (Gioachino Rossini), Thus do they all (Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart), The Threepenny opera (Bertold Brecht), The Sleepwalker (Vincenzo Bellini) and Powder Her Face (Thomas Adès).

The 2012-2013 opera season has twelve operas and 101 shows, from November 2012 to October 2013, including Othello (Giuseppe Verdi), Tristan and Iseult (Richard Wagner), The bandits (Giuseppe Verdi), The Barber of Seville (Gioachino Rossini), La bohème (Giacomo Puccini), The Makropulos Affair (Leoš Janáček) and an Italian contemporary drama (to be defined).

An unmissable exhibition, in which the famous VENETIAN PEARLS will be on show, will be open in the Museo del Vetro [Museum of Glass] on the island of Murano until 6th January 2012.

The market for these glass items was considerable between the 1800s and the 1950s and the pearls were in great demand in distant places such as America and Africa, because they were supposed to ward off bad luck. The exhibition is dedicated to the most famous glass company making these jewels, ERCOLE MORETTI e f.lli, which still exists.

During the 2012 Carnival Season Venice will be the European capital of drama. This year’s theme, as suggested by the title “LA VITA E’ TEATRO. TUTTI IN MASCHERA” [Life is theatre. Everybody dress up] is about transferring everyday life onto the stage.
